BIHS earns International Baccalaureate certification
By Rory Bled, BIHS Vice Principal
As of February 11, Berkeley High School is authorized to teach the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, starting in Fall 2008. We may now refer to our school as an IB World School.
Although Berkeley High was listed as such on the IBO website earlier this month, we did not get the official letter from the IBO director general in Switzerland until last week because it got lost in the mail. Needless to say, I was both thrilled and relieved when I heard.
So what does this mean for Berkeley International High School? It means that we can offer all those IB classes we’ve been talking so enthusiastically about to our students, and that our students can be eligible to earn the IB Diploma.
Many schools take three years to get their authorization; we accomplished our goal in two. For this achievement, I thank all of you – students, staff, and parents. You worked tirelessly to produce our application and to articulate to the IB site team your appreciation of the International Baccalaureate. The team told us that you spoke as if in one voice, you understood so well the goals and values of IB.
We are now looking forward to our first IB course offerings in the fall, including the BIHS IB English and History of the Americas courses – both Higher Level – and to the next step in our global adventure. I’m sure it will be a glorious one!
